Charles Calhoun

Charles Calhoun, an independent consultant for the Council, plans and produces professional development programs for teachers K-12 throughout Maine, co-directs the annual Winter Weekends, and helps write grant proposals. Born in Monroe, Louisiana, he studied history at the University of Virginia and law at Christ Church, Oxford, where he held a Rhodes scholarship. He was editor of Bowdoin magazine from 1985-1992; his publications include A Small College in Maine: Two Hundred Years of Bowdoin (1993), Maine: A Compass American Guide (1994), and Longfellow: A Rediscovered Life (Beacon Press, 2004). After 24 years in Maine, Charles now lives in Dorchester, Mass., from which he commutes to Portland by bus several days a week. In January 2006, he was named Scholar in Residence at the Council.
