Lewis Hine: The Maine Child Labor Photographs

This traveling exhibition of photographs of children working in the textile and canning industries of the early 1900's is at the Creative Photographic Arts Center in Lewiston through mid-March, 782-1369. The Center and the Quoddy Maritime Museum in Eastport received grants from MHC to support this exhibit. LITERATURE AND LITERACY

The Bates/Community Humanities Seminars, a summer enrichment reading and discussion program for high school students in Oxford County.

Community Poetry Events - Series 2000, an interpretive program of classic and contemporary poetry in various Belfast community settings.

Maine Authors in Our Schools, classroom discussions by Maine authors visiting elementary schools in the Berwick area.

Maine Reads 2000, a live program of short fiction read and interpreted by Maine authors and performed in Portland, Buckfield, and Camden.
PCA-Great Performances, Portland, $5,000

Soundideas, a 13-week radio series featuring selected readings and live discussion programs by USM faculty in their fields of interest.
WMPG, South Portland, $5,530

Born to Read grants througout the state provide training to parents and caregivers in reading aloud to young children.

ARTS & HERITAGE

This is a new grant program funded jointly by the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission for public programs that combine art and cultural heritage. It is part of the New Century Community Program, a cultural initiative funded by the Maine Legislature in 1999.

Chantons, the production and distribution to schools and libraries of a CD celebrating Franco-American heritage with traditional French songs performed in both French and English.

Maine Garden & Landscape Trail, a new cultural tourism resource: a map and guide highlighting Maine's designed, historic, and vernacular landscapes.
Pine Tree State Arboretum, Augusta, $2,000

Northeast Silent Film Festival-2000, a festival of historic silent films related to New England, accompanied by live piano music.
Northeast Historic Film, Bucksport, $2,000

Photographing Maine: 1840-2000, an exhibit focusing on Maine's role in the development of photography as a fine art form.
Maine Coast Artists, Rockport, $2,000

Using the LandMaking a Living; Hope in 2000, a documentary project exploring the land-based work traditions of Hope, Maine.

COMMUNITY HISTORY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

I Remember...Mount Desert Island Families in the 20th Century, a project to collect oral history and artifacts from island families.

The Historic Summer Street Walking Tour, a student / community project to research, design, produce, distribute, and promote a walking tour brochure and map of Hampden's historic Summer Street District.

The Peaks Island Military Reservation Trail, a self-guided tour and audio tape narrated by historian Joel Eastman exploring the military installations and fortifications on Peaks Island.

Fourth Annual Wooden Canoe Festival, 2000, a grant supporting public interpretive events surrounding the Wooden Canoe Festival.

Let Us Remember the Old Micmacs, a photography exhibit organized by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology which will travel to various Maine sites documenting Micmac culture.

The Helen Nearing Project, this grant supports publicity for the premiere screening of Helen Nearing: Conscious Living/Conscious Dying, a 60-minute film documentary.
Maine Alliance of Media Arts, Portland, $225

The Herbert Hayes Homestead - Recreating the Past To Help Understand the Future. Through archaeological research at a local site, students of Edward Little High School will study and share the cultural history of their community.

Connecting Kids, Community, Curriculum & Trails: A Workshop for Teachers, a day -long workshop aimed at helping teachers use Portland's extensive network of pedestrian trails as a tool for teaching about sense of place, history, community planning, and ecology.
