Financial Summary

Income and Expenses FY03

During FY03 Maine Humanities Council had operating income of $1,310,966 and operating expenses of $1,282,458. The Council has never incurred an operating deficit.

Over the past decade, MHC's income has become increasingly diversified. As recently as 1995, nearly all the Council's resources came from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a federal agency. This past year, NEH grants (both the Council's base operating grant and various competitive grants) accounted for less than half of its revenue. NEH support has been supplemented by a variety of grants from other, mostly private, sources, as well as a growing base of individual donors. In addition, the Council received $328,645 in in-kind contributions of time, mileage, and materials (not included here).

80% of the Council's spending supported programs, grants and technical assistance in FY03.
