Other Audio on Demand programming in Maine
Maine AIRS
This special news and information radio program broadcasts extensive material from Maine’s daily and weekly newspapers to individuals who are visually impaired or print disabled. Volunteer readers present information not usually accessible in audio form such as community calendars, shopping news and obituaries. The Maine Reader program presents books by Maine authors or stories about Maine, read in their entirety by Maine AIRS volunteers.
Maine State Library Outreach Services
Audio services include Talking Books (a Federally-funded program which provides recorded books and special players free to persons who are blind, visually impaired, physically handicapped (cannot hold a book) or who have a doctor-certified reading disability) and Talking Newspapers. The Books by Mail service delivers books, both written and recorded, to the homebound and to towns without full-service libraries.
Speaking in Maine
“Speaking in Maine” features diverse speakers recorded in towns and cities throughout the state of Maine. The program, which primarily covers public affairs, is produced by the Maine Public Broadcasting Network’s Barry Darling and Gordon Fellis. It is just one of many MPBN programs available on demand.
Muskie School of Public Service Audio Archive
As part of its civic engagement mission, the Muskie School often hosts public forums on current public policy issues. The audio archive contains recordings of these forums, as well as the 2005 series of public lectures examining trends and changes in Maine’s political, economic, and social landscapes that were later published in the book Changing Maine: 1960-2010.
Salt Institute for Documentary Studies
Salt trains aspiring writers, radio producers, and photographers in the art of documentary storytelling — creating thought-provoking, richly worded stories. Samples of student work in radio and other genres are available on their website, along with news about gallery exhibits and alumni accomplishments.
University of Maine Gateway to Digital Collections
The University of Maine System Libraries have compiled this Gateway to Digital Collections to provide online access to thousands of selected, digitized materials in all formats: full text, image, sound, video, and finding aids. The materials are among the special collections made available by the UMS Libraries, in collaboration with other campus units, and in partnership with other cultural institutions in Maine.
From the Fishouse
This audio archive of emerging poets was founded in 2004 by Maine native Matt O’Donnell, who is also the associate editor of Bowdoin Magazine. From the Fishouse offers free recordings of work by over 100 poets, as well as more than 200 audio files of poets talking about their craft.
