WINTER WEEKEND 2008: The Aeneid

The text for Winter Weekend 2008 is Robert Fagles’s recent translation of Virgil’s The Aeneid, the foundational epic of the Roman Empire. Topics to be discussed by scholars and participants include Virgil’s relationship to Roman history, the Rome of Caesar Augustus (Virgil’s patron), the challenges of translating Latin poetry, the influence of Virgil on Western culture, and Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas.

Winter Weekend 2008 takes place March 7 and 8 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. The $200 registration fee includes a copy of the book, background readings, a reception, dinner, lunch, and coffee. CEUs are available for teachers. Limited scholarships are available for college and high school students. The program starts at 5 p.m. on Friday and continues until mid-afternoon on Saturday.

We’re sorry—the program is sold out. If you would like your name placed on the waiting list, please call Annie Medeiros at (207) 773-5051.

We have a one-page list of some over-night accommodations in the greater Brunswick area; download it as a Word document or as a pdf form. Also, mapquest may be useful for driving directions.
