WINTER WEEKEND 2011: The Red and the Black

The text for Winter Weekend 2011 is Stendhal’s 1830 novel: The Red and the Black. Does a young intellectual from a provincial town have much of a chance in 19th century Parisian society? Stendhal’s psychological portrait of Julien Sorel and his love affairs mesh well with a satiric depiction of religious and society life.

In recognition of the generosity of Winter Weekend sponsors, the MHC has opened the early registration opportunity. If you are interested in this option, contact MHC Director of Development Diane Magras.

Winter Weekend 2011 will take place March 11 and 12 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. The $200 registration fee includes a copy of the book, background readings, a reception, dinner, lunch, and coffee. CEUs are available for teachers. Limited scholarships are available for college and high school students. The program starts at 5 p.m. on Friday and continues until mid-afternoon on Saturday.

To sign up, print off the form, as a Word document (33kb) or as a PDF document (78kb), and send it to the Maine Humanities Council, 674 Brighton Avenue, Portland ME 04102.
