Barns are so much a part of the landscape in New England that we sometimes take them for granted. They remind us of our rural past when a majority of the population lived on farms, but they also symbolize today's farmers and their continual struggle to make a living off the land. And yet what do we really know about barns? What can they tell us about our history? Many are being lost to age and encroaching development. How can they be preserved?

The Maine Humanities Council and its community museum partners will answer those questions and more by bringing the Smithsonian traveling exhibit Barn Again! Celebrating an American Icon to three locations in Maine: The Saco Museum in Saco (April 7 - June 8), Musée culturel
Barn in York County
York County
du Mont-Carmel in Lille (June 15 - August 12), and the Bethel Historical Society in Bethel (August 19 - October 22). See specific contact information to the left.

This is a wonderful exhibit for the whole family which will trace the history of farming and the unique place barns hold within our culture. You can learn about the wide variety of barn styles, explore life on a Maine farm as your grandparents knew it, or find out about resources for preservation. The exhibit features an architectural scale model of an early barn; examples of games, toys, and period advertising; plus many historic images of barns across the country. Each museum will also feature a companion exhibit showcasing Maine barns,

farming, and related artifacts, plus special activities in the area. Contact exhibit sites directly for more information.
