    When Albert and his tortoise family celebrate Grandmother’s birthday, he can’t think of an adequate gift. Finally, he has an idea, but it means parting with a very special possession...
  • Boxes for Katje by Candace Fleming, illus. by Stacey Dressen-McQueen. (2003) Ages 5 and up
    After World War II, the villagers in Olst, Holland, have dire needs. When care packages of food start arriving from the U.S.A., Katje “makes a decision” to share them. Based on a true story.
  • Chloë’s Birthday...and Me by Giselle Potter. (2004) Ages 5 and up
    In this autobiographical story, Giselle tells us what it’s like to envy-and very nearly spoil-her 5-year-old sister’s special day. Set in France with cultural details and French words throughout.
  • Four Feet, Two Sandals by Karen Lynn Williams and Khandra Mohammed, illus. by Doug Chayka. (2007) Ages 5 and up
    In a refugee camp in Peshawar, Lina finds one sandal and befriends Feroza, who has the other. The girls share shoes and stories, until Lina’s family is resettled, and they share only memories.
  • Give a Goat by Jan West Schrock. (2008) Ages 5 and up
    Beatrice’s Goat, a book about the impact of Heifer International, appeared on the 2005 ‘giving’ list. Give a Goat is about kids who were inspired by Beatrice’s Goat to take action. The author, who lives in Maine, is the daughter of Heifer International’s founder, Dan West.
  • Pip & Squeak by Ian Schoenherr. (2007) Ages 3-8
    Pip and Squeak forget their gift for Gus when they rush out to his birthday party. They search for a substitute, and to their surprise, find one that appeals to Gus much more than the original gift.
  • Thank You Bear by Greg Foley. (2007) Ages 2-5
    Bear finds a box that he’s sure Mouse will love, but the other animals question the gift until Bear’s enthusiasm is completely deflated. Only Mouse’s hearty thanks make him feel better.
  • Will Sheila Share? by Elivia Savadier. (2008) Ages 2-4
    Sheila can share her green beans, but will she share her candy? Nana helps Sheila notice that Jess is sad when she doesn’t share. Appropriate for toddlers, but appealing to a broad range of ages.
