  • Walter the Baker by Eric Carle (1972) Ages 4-8
  • By order of the Duke, Walter the baker must invent a tasty roll through which the rising sun can shine three times...and so the pretzel is born.
  • The Tortilla Factory by Gary Paulsen. Pictures by Ruth Wright Paulsen (1995) Ages 5-9
  • This simple prose poem describes, in broad strokes, how corn is harvested and made into tortillas while rough, warm-toned paintings set the scenes.
  • Sun Bread by Elisa Kleven (2001) Ages 2-5
  • Rhyming couplets tell the story of a baker who helps brighten up her snowbound town, populated by animals. Recipe included.
  • Bread Song by Frederick Lipp. Pictures by Jason Gaillard (2004) Ages 4-8
  • A bashful little boy from Thailand and his wise grandfather discover a special treat and a welcoming community at a bakery modeled after Standard Baking Co. in Portland.
  • Bread Comes to Life by George Levenson. Photographs by Shmuel Thayer (2004) Ages 4-7
  • Simple, rhyming text and beautiful, close-up color photographs celebrate "the most ancient food that is still part of the modern diet."
  • Bread and Jam for Frances by Russell Hoban. Pictures by Lillian Hoban (1964) Ages 4-8
  • Frances wants only bread and jam at every meal, but to her surprise, when her parents grant her wish, she gets tired and tries other foods.
  • Tony's Bread: An Italian Folktale by Tomie DePaola (1989) Ages 4-8
  • A baker loses his daughter but gains a bakery in the grand city of Milano after meeting a determined nobleman and baking a unique loaf of bread.
  • The Runaway Tortilla by Eric A. Kimmel. Pictures by Randy Cecil (2000) Ages 4-8
  • In this Southwestern version of a the Gingerbread Man, a tortilla runs away from the Tia Lupe and Tio Jose, who want to cook him and serve him up at their taqueria.
  • Bread Bread Bread by Ann Morris. Photographs by Ken Heyman (1989) Ages 4-8
  • Photographs and text celebrates the many different kinds of bread enjoyed around the world.
  • Bread is for Eating by David Gershator and Phillis Gershator. Pictures by Emma Shaw-Smith (1995) Ages 4-8
