2007 BORN TO READ Conference, Workshops

Allyson Dean of MRTQ led a discussion of Maine’s new Infant-Toddler Learning Guidelines. Ideas for family involvement and home-school literacy connections from “Helping Parents Help Us.” Jeanne Burkes demonstrated how to use rhythm and repetition to make language fun. Participants in the “Moved to Read” workshop practiced incorporating movement into stories.
  • “I wish we could have been in more workshops—not enough time in the day.”

The following workshops were each held twice during the conference:

  • A,B,C, and Do, Re, Mi: The Magical Way to Literacy, presented by Ellie Libby, Extension Educator for the University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension program in midcoast Maine
  • Chants, Rhymes, and Stories to Tell, presented by Jeanne Burkes, Technical Assistance Specialist for the Head Start Quality Initiative at the University of Massachusetts
  • Children as Storytellers, presented by Heather Bowen, Teacher and Parent at Peopleplace Cooperative Preschool in Camden
  • Helping Parents Help Us, presented by Susan Bennett-Armistead, Assistant Professor of Early Literacy at the University of Maine
  • How to Tell a Darn Good Story, presented by John Porcino, professional storyteller
  • Moved to Read, presented by Nancy Salmon, owner of Dance Resources, LLC
  • New & Recommended Titles in Children’s Books, presented by Vicky Smith, Director and Children’s Librarian at McArthur Library, Biddeford
  • Peaceable Stories and Non-Violence in Children’s Books, presented by Anne Sibley O’Brien, Maine-based children’s book author
  • Sharing Books With Babies, presented by Maureen Hickey, Patricia Tripp, and Karen White of the State of Maine Infant-Toddler Initiative
  • Tips for Meeting Early Literacy Infant-Toddler Learning Guidelines, presented by Allyson Dean, Associate Director of Maine Roads to Quality
  • “I’ll be using the Infant-Toddler Learning Guidelines to enrich my library story programs.”
  • “Now I believe storytime should be the main event—not the ‘filler activity’ during transition times.”
  • “I will use recommended titles that provide examples of ‘playing with words,’ such as rhyming exercises and phonemic awareness activities.”
  • “‘Children as storytellers’ is wonderful idea with much value. I will incorporate it into my classroom.”
  • “I learned how to use books as examples with problem-solving in the classroom.”
  • “I will combine music with stories, props, and motor activities more often, to assist with sensory and language development.”
