A one-week seminar for high school students who enjoy history

If you think the political atmosphere is tough right now, you should have been around in the 1950s. Talk about scare tactics and one side demonizing the other! Senator Joseph McCarthy charged full steam ahead interrogating suspected Communists and the atmosphere was rife with suspicion. Imagine having the courage to speak your mind in the midst of such recrimination. Senator Margaret Chase Smith did just that in 1950. Her “Declaration of Conscience” speech represents the power of an individual holding firm to her own moral compass and creating change as a result.
