Winter Weekend

The Council's annual humanities weekend seminar on a classic text answers a deeply felt need among serious general readers to confront, in a group setting, a difficult and challenging text.

Traditionally held at Bowdoin College in early March, the program begins with a Friday evening dinner (a gastronomic taste of the time and culture reflected in the chosen text) and presentation. The group reconvenes Saturday morning to spend the day in small group discussion, lectures with recognized scholars who help interpret the text and provide historical and cultural context, and continued explorations through art, and theatre.

The program fee includes:

  • a hard-cover edition of the text (provided well in advance)
  • background readings and study questions
  • dinner, lunch and reception
  • tuition covering lectures, exhibits, presentations and discussion groups
CEUs are available to participating teachers.
