U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith visits Maine as part of her project “American Conversations: Celebrating Poems in Rural Communities.”
Doors open at 6:00 PM, event starts at 7:00 PM | Unused seats will be first come, first serve.
To coincide with her “American Conversations” visits, Tracy K. Smith is also unveiling a new poetry anthology featuring the work of 50 living American poets: American Journal: Fifty Poems for Our Time. As the title suggests, they are contemplating what it feels like to live, work, love, strive, raise a family, and survive many kinds of loss in this vast and varied nation.
“Because poems put us in touch with our most powerful memories, feelings, questions and wishes, I imagined that talking about poems might be a way of leaping past small-talk and collapsing the distance between strangers,” Smith has said. “I’m very excited about the opportunity to take what I consider to be the good news of poetry to parts of the country where literary festivals don’t always go. Poetry is something that’s relevant to everyone’s life, whether they’re habitual readers of poetry or not.” – Tracy K. Smith
