What kind of projects do MHC grants support?

Our grants assist Maine’s nonprofit organizations in developing community projects that incorporate one or more humanities disciplines. We are particularly interested in supporting projects that:

  • Stimulate meaningful community dialogue
  • Attract diverse public audiences
  • Are participatory and engaging
  • Invite discovery of the humanities in interesting and exciting ways
  • Incorporate the guidance of humanities professionals
  • Are free
  • Are collaborative

Projects in rural areas and those that reach intergenerational audiences are also of particular interest.

What happens after I submit my MHC grant application?

  • You will receive a confirmation email
  • Grants Committee reviews your application
  • We prepare award decisions
  • You can expect award decisions to be mailed within 6 weeks of application deadline. 

Mini Grants

  • Award letter
  • Two contracts that include our Executive Director’s signature. One is to be signed and returned to the MHC.
  • List of MHC Board members
  • Check in the amount of your award

After we receive your signed contracts, we will send to you:

  • Guidelines and electronic copies of the final report (links are further down on this page)

Arts & Humanities Grants

  • Award letter
  • Two copies of a contract (both of which are to be signed and returned to MHC)
  • Check in the amount of your award

After we receive your signed contracts, we will send to you:

  • One of the signed contracts, with our Executive Director’s signature as well

Major Grants

  • Award letter

  • A check for 90% of the awarded amount. The final 10% will be sent upon receipt of your final report.

Special Category Grants

Any grants offered in a special category will typically follow the Mini Grant process.

When is my final report due?

Final reports are due within 90 days of the completion of the grant period.

How do I submit my final report?

Final Reports Consist a Final Report Narrative and Budget Form.

  1. Final Report Narrative
    We recommend you review in preparation of submission. When ready, submit your Final Report Narrative online, allowing about 30 minutes to complete.
  2. Budget Form
    Download the Final Budget Form and email us a completed copy.

We also ask that you email or mail us copies of any publicity, press coverage, evaluations, or other supporting material.

In addition to the final report, we encourage all grantees to fill out an anonymous survey about your experience applying for and receiving an MHC grant. We are always trying to improve our process and make sure that what we offer matches what Maine’s cultural organizations need. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Can I apply for a new grant if I haven’t submitted the final report for my existing grant?

If your final report is OVERDUE, you may not apply for another MHC grant until that previous report is filed and approved. If a previous project is still in process and the deadline for the final report has not yet passed, then you would be able to apply for another grant provided you fit the rules of eligibility (for example, an organization may not receive both a Mini and Major Grant in the same year).

Can I get an extension on my project?

Yes, we can offer extensions. Please contact us to discuss your request.

Some things have changed on my project since I originally submitted my application. Do I need to discuss all changes with you?

We understand that between the time an application is put together and the time you begin to implement the project, some things may shift, which is fine. If there are significant changes in your project, please contact us for further guidance.

I didn’t spend all the grant money. What do I do?

Any funds remaining unspent at the end of the project should be returned to us by check, payable to Maine Humanities Council.

How can I publicize my grant project?

Outreach is just as important as the structure of your project–you want your hard work to have an audience! We have gathered a few helpful hints for you to publicize your grant, organization, or program.

Press releases 

A press release to local media may result in coverage of your event. Think weekly newspapers and local radio or television outlets–they have a lot of time and/or paper to fill, and tend to be very open to community stories. Keep deadlines in mind so you don’t miss a timely opportunity; weekly papers usually need to know about an event at least a week in advance of publishing an issue. Including photos can be helpful; make sure it’s a JPEG and hi-resolution so it can be reproduced in print.

Local congressional representatives

We encourage grantees to notify their local legislators about their grant award and any programming related to it–and please let us know when you do by including a copy of your letter or email in your final report.

Social media

Please let us know if you publicize your event using Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram; we can help you by reposting your information in our social media.


Never underestimate the power of locally posted flyers or posters. Many libraries, town halls, grocery stores, coffee shops/restaurants, schools, and businesses have public bulletin boards.

Community organizations

Create a list of fellow community organizations that might be interested in your program or event, and spread the word through personal outreach. We find that this kind of word-of-mouth provides the best results since it taps an existing professional and/or personal network. Some ideas: Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Boy Scout/Girl Scout, Veterans organizations, Knights of Columbus/Shriners/Masons/etc., City Council and other community officials, K-12 schools and clubs, area colleges or senior colleges, houses of worship, and other nonprofits.


Hire a photographer to document your event and give you great images to use in promoting your organization after the event is finished.

Organizational newsletters/mailings

Don’t forget to share information with your own list of followers through an e-newsletter or mailing.

Community calendars

MPBN offers a statewide community calendar where you can list your event; many downtowns also have associations that offer online calendars and/or regular newsletters highlighting local events (such as Main Street Maine communities: Augusta, Bath, Belfast, Biddeford, Brunswick, Gardiner, Rockland, Saco, Skowhegan, and Waterville).

How do I get logos to use in my outreach materials?

How do I credit the MHC as a funder?

In any web-based or print materials promoting your program, please include the MHC logo and the following language: “Funding provided in part by the Maine Humanities Council.” (If your grant is an Arts & Humanities Grant, please say “Funding provided in part by the Maine Humanities Council and Maine Arts Commission.”) If your program includes a public event, we would also appreciate your calling attention to our support of your program in a similar fashion when introducing the program.
