Jan Bindas-Tenney is a Program Officer working on New Books, New Readers, Veterans Book Group, and the Poetry Express. Jan is a writer and community organizer who learned to organize and to write on strike lines with service workers fighting for healthcare and bathroom breaks, forming unions with janitors, lunch ladies and security officers. Most recently, Jan served as the Advocacy Director at Preble Street. Jan holds a Master of Fine Arts in Nonfiction Creative Writing from the University of Arizona and a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College. Jan’s writing has appeared on cardboard protest signs, in the opinion pages of Maine newspapers, in legislative testimony, as well as in Orion, Guernica, Gulf Coast, Arts & Letters, CutBank, the Maine Review, among other places. Jan identifies as non-binary and prefers they/them pronouns. Jan lives in Portland with their partner Rachael, daughter Sonny, and dog Bisbee.
