  • In Your Own Words

This presentation is about the importance of veterans telling their own stories as an avenue of not just healing but reclaiming the image of the veteran from the jaws of popular culture. In the silence of our experiences, we unknowingly let other industries tell our stories for us. I will share my own arc and stories from my published work and look at other writers tall about how other writers have dealt with post-military life from Vonnegut to Tobias Wolff, and how the entertainment industry especially in the Vietnam era began to control the narrative of the veteran.
